  1. The article was about how art is used as a diagnostic tool for children and families. For example if there are a bunch of scribbles or stray marks that is a sign of chaos. Art therapists are like regular therapists only they use art as their form of communication. Emotions can easily be conveyed in art for example I love to take pictures and paint, and when i'm sad i take pictures or paint images of dead trees or other sad objects. But when I'm happy i use bright colors and create cheerful images. Do you think you would be susceptible to an art therapy session and what do you think your art would say about you?

  2. This article is about how art is another way for children to communicate with their emotions and issues in their lives. Art therapy is a diagnostic tool that is more popular for children. As children become teenagers they tend to become critical of their art work. Art therapy lets the therapist know if the child is closed off or an open book. They use the art to figure out the emotion of the child and where to start with them as well.

**Why is it that as we get older art is a get away for most teenagers? Does that mean we have become critical of our work? As though our emotions too?

  3. @Erin - To me I think the art would show the emotion of the person drawing it. Although if they were to draw a pretty picture and they are suffering through issues I'd think that objects would be left out, Wouldn't you?

  4. Art therapy is usually used by children until they become older. In art therapy their can be a lot of meanings, such as a stick figure with no arms or legs can mean a child feels powerless, or a house without windows can mean a child has closed them self off for some reason. Other things that can indicate a child's life, is weather they draw in pencil, colored pencils, or markers. Honestly I think being a art therapy is very interesting. One thing about it though is that you would have to pay very close attention to the details in the picture.

  6. As explained in the article, art can be used as a diagnostic tool for therapists to help understand the issues occuring in the child's life. One test they use for a child is to draw a house, tree, and person. That is all the instructions they can get and when the child is done the therapists will analize the picture and ask the child questions about it. For example, if there is a hole in the tree that could be a sign of abuse. The test is not a definite diagnostic test and needs to be further looked into.

Erin: I feel as if the therapists would say that I hide my emotions. I tend to bottle them up unitl I can't handle it anymore and I blame the ones I love because I know they'll love me back even when it has nothing to do with them.

  7. Unlike traditional therapy, art therapy uses drawing, instead of talking, as a form of expressing emotions. Pencils, markers, and crayons are provided for the patient, and there are certain indicators in the art that allows the professional to explore further, if needed. However, no one drawing is a “definitive diagnostic tool.” Some indicators include the use of materials (pencil shows need for control) and the overall look of the drawing (scribbles mean chaos). I think this form of therapy would be fun, but also very deep. For example, I could draw whatever came to my mind at the moment, and find out it means something totally different and reflects my mood. For young children, as well as adults, I think this is a great way of expression because sometimes the words for emotions are not as easy to say, than to draw.

Do art therapists analyze the art of adults the same way they do childrens?

Erin: I have had a tough year this year, and I would be open to an art therapy session if I had the opportunity. I think my art would be sad and dark, and somewhat depressing based off of what I've been through this year. I think that alone is sad because I'm usually a really happy person!

  8. Brittany: The article said that when an adult is doing this kind of therapy, it is mainly to see what their childhood was like. I do know that adults with illnesses like to do art to keeep their maind off things.

  9. Cierra: Teenagers tend to be more judgemental of things. If something is not absolutely perfect in their eyes they tend to dislike it. However, some teenagers do use art as an outlet for their emotions but those people generally have a passion for art.

Brittany: The therapist would treat an adult differently then a child because they act differently. The concept is still the same, they still look at the colors, what is in the picture and what is missing to see what the person is feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Cierra: I think as we get older art becomes easier because as teenagers we don't know exactly how to express ourselves at certain times. With art, we can express our emotions as clearly as if we were speaking.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @ Brittany : Same here an art session is relieving but as you my art would be dark as well.

  12. The articles tells us about art therapy and how it is used to find indicators in a child's emotions. A program that is used for art therapy is "House/Tree/Person". The child is given a sheet of paper to draw a house and no further directions. During this if a child chooses colored pencils this shows that they are in need of control. If a child chooses markers this shows that they are comfortable with themselves.

Brittany- I do not think that art therapists would analyze the art of adults the same way as childern. I do think though that the art therapists would analyze the adults that might have mental issues and problems.

Erin- I am horrible at art, but I like to do it. I believe an art therapist would see my art as abstract because I do not know how to draw.

  13. Art, no matter what form, has always been an important part in my life. Art is expressing your emotions through painting, music, photography, etc. Although I grew up around all types of art, i didn't realize that a childs drawings could tell you so much about their life. For instance if a child is drawing a house and there are no windows or doors in the house the child might be closed off emotionally for some reason. If there are a lot of scribbles in the childs picture it may mean that they feel like their life is full of cunfusion or chaos. You should not have negative comments about a childs drawing, this may casue the child to close off from you. Art therapy is very interesting and I would love to learn more about it.

Brittany: I do not think that they can analyze an adult the same way as a child. In the article it said as we get older we start to become more critical of our work, which would cause it to be less from emotion and more about looks.

Erin: If I did art therapy I think the therapist would tell me i am closed off when if comes to my emotions. I want to be happy even when I know I am not.

  14. This article is about how art is used as a diagnostic tool with children and even families. The drawings they make help an art therapist indicate what emotional feelings they may have. According to the website, if there is an indication of a problem or pathology, then the clinician can open the door to explore this further. Whether a child draws with crayon, colored pencil, or marker may indicite some of their emotional feelings. Not only the can the utensil they pick convey some of their feelings, but also what they decide to draw. Random marks and scribbles can show chaos. A house with no windows or doors may show that the child is off emotionally. A drawing of a person with large hands/claw hands can indicate a feeling of aggression.

Brittany- I think they may. According to a website I found, "Art therapy can be helpful for children, adults, couples, and families. People often understand how children can benefit from art therapy, as they sometimes don't have the verbal capacity to express themselves. Adults struggle with the same challenge - life is complex, feelings are mixed, and sometimes words aren't enough." Since adults struggle with the same challenges, I would think they are analyzed in similar ways.

Erin- I think the art therapist would find my art to be bright and happy. I try not to dwell on the negative aspects of my life.

  15. Art therapy can be a powerful source of therapy. Art is very informative. They look to see how the drawings show emotions. Crayons, markers, and colored pencils are supplied and then the child is asked to draw a house, a person, and then a tree. There are several indicators towards emotions. What they choose to draw with is also an indicator.

Erin: I have been through a lot of stuff since starting high school. I do think I could do art therapy and I think it would reveal emotions that I have been trying to hide for a while. I think it would show that I don’t have everything together like I act.

Brittany: I couldn’t really find anything about if they analyze adults’ art the same way they do children’s. I did read that they study the technique of drawing or painting or whatever they use. They analyze the colors used and the way they draw lines, curves, etc.

  16. You can tell a lot about a child from a drawing that they make. Children commonly express their feelings through art rather than speaking out loud. Many times they are afraid or unconfortable to discuss many things.Certain things about the way they make a picture can tell you information about how 7hey feel and how they get treated at home, abuse for example. Even though a picture can say a lot, you do not want to assume anything from the picture without further analysis. Art therapist are the career experts at deciphering what a child's drawing can mean. They do not tell the child that their drawing is good or bad, just simply ask questions about it because children can be easily offended.
    Comments:
To answer Brittany's question, I think that art therapist do not use the same techniques on adults as they do children because children are more likely to express their feelings through art unlike adults.

For me I think that music therapy would help me more. I am so dedicated to music that it becomes very emotional to you. As a muscician I express a lot of my feeling from the day in music because it speaks to me more than art. Does anyone else feel the same way?

    ReplyDelete
  17. You can tell a lot about a child from a drawing they create. Children seem to express more of their feelings thorugh art instead of talking them out with someone. Different emotions can be deciphered from the drawing because of certain drawings withing the picture down to what kind of materials they use. Art therapist can pull things out like abuse, and even the feeling of being powerless just from certain parts of the picture. Even though parts of the picture can read certain things, art therapist cannot assume any parts of the picture mean anything without further evidence. Just because there picture screams bad home life does not mean that is the case.

    Comments:
To answer Brittany's questions, I think that these techniques are used mainly on children because adults do not tend to express theor emotions through art like children. Like you said sometimes it is easier not to say things.

Well Erin, I would have to say that I would probably use music therapy not art therapy. Music is my way of expression everyday and it makes an emotional connection with you that is like nothing you can describe.

  18. Art therapy is used, in some cases, to diagnose patients. When first entering the class, you will be asked to draw a variety of things. For example, you will be told to draw a house. You cannot ask any questions because all you use is your imagination. There is no wrong way to draw a house. The picture can show the patients emotions. It can also be done on a whole family. They choose one crayon and then have to draw four certain drawings. I think this is really good for children to express their feelings. Their drawings could show so much more than what they could tell you.

Andee - I never thought of them using art on a adult to show their child life. That is a really good idea but most people never forget things from when they were a child.

Grace - I really do not think that they would base it on how good you are at art. If you are really trying to express an emotion and think it would be more clear to the art therapist than you think.

  19. I have always been taught that art is a good source of therapy. Art has always been a big part of my life. I used to always draw with markers when I was little and through this article I realize that coloring with markers shows that I am comfortable in my own world. Also if you draw with colored pencils then you are one that needs to be in control of their world. Also when family portraits are drawn the bigger person seems to show power to that child. I know that art is a big part of a child's life but I believe that it is also very powerful as a teen. I am currently in ceramic classes and I love it. I get to express myself through the shapes and glaze I put into my projects.

Kay-Leigh - I agree with you. Negative comments should never be made about a childs art because that is one important way they experss themselves.

Brittany - I also think that art would be very relieving but my art would have many warm colors and dark tones as well.

  20. Art thearpy is a new way to see how a child or someone feels at that point of time. They use different techniques to see how a child is feeling. By drawing they can tell a variety of tihngs. Just by seeing if the child choose to use markers, or pencils can mean that they feel comfortable or in need of control. People use the "House/tree/person" strategy. Sometimes their parents or peers look down at them and give them negative feedback, it's important that thereapist life their spirits up, and not down. It's amazing how much a simple drawing can tell or show you!

Alison - Some people do not like art, and are more into music. So i'm sure you are not the only one! if you have a passion for something, that noramlly will be your type of "therapy"!

kay-leigh - Art therapy would be something neat to try! You are very sweet person, so don't be sad! paige loves you!(: But i tihnk that this is going to become more popular when more people hear about it.

  21. Art therapy has been used by many people, without them even knowing. It is typically used with children that do not talk much or if they do not understand what is going on. The pictures drawn could explain a child's emotions. For example, if a child draws a house with no windows or doors, it will be difficult to get into the child's emotions. In some way, each drawing could have a meaning behind it. All you have to do is look past the drawing and try to find out what the meaning could be. I think art therapy would be great to use with younger kids or people that have a hard time expressing their emotions. It could possibly change who they are if someone helps them by realizing the meanings behind each drawing.

Paige- I agree, I didn't think a drawing could mean so much! Children are usually proud of what they draw and it could have some kind of meaning behind it. This article opened my eyes to that.
Cierra- I think teens tend to use art as an outlet to get away from what is going on in their lives. Some people just doodle, while others draw extravagent pictures with "no meaning". But if you actually look at parts of the picture, not the whole thing, you could probably pinpoint certain emotions or how they view things.

  22. This article is about art therapy and how it is used. Art therapy is most commonly used in children. Therapists find it very informative. Art is a way that children can express their feelings. A therapist may ask the child to draw various things. What the child draws and how they draw it can describe the child's emotional feelings. Art therapists also say that if a child uses pencils that they are in control, and if they use markers, they are comfortable. Also, the the things that they draw can say a lot of things. On the drawing, if there are multiple scribbles the child may feel chaos and stressed. A lot can be told from a child's way of drawing things.

Kay-Leigh: I definitely agree that art therapy is something I would also like to learn more about. I think it would be a great way of expressing yourself.

Paige: I also think art therapy will become more popular once people hear and learn more about it. It will be interesting to see how popular alternative therapies become.

  23. Art therapy is one way to express emotions. Art therapy is mostly used by children. There is a method called house, tree, and person. This method will indicate the child's feelings. An art supply such as pencils, markers, and crayons can also help determine how a child feels. If they choose pencil they are in need of control. If they choose markers they are more comfortable. If they choose crayons they are considered to be in between.I think its interesting how therapists can determine how others feel just by choosing an art supply and by looking at drawings.

Aubrey- i agree with you, a drawing can show much more that what you can say especially if you are going through hard times.

Cierra- i think that teenagers critic their own art. Some might not like the way they draw so they just don't draw at all but that shouldn't really matter because its not about how best you can draw its about expressing your emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  24. In this article of art therapy I learned a lot about drawings that I never thought of before. I learned that you can tell a lot from a drawing a little kid draws. Such as how they draw a house, if they draw a house without windows they can feel trapped. If they draw they people with claws or shwoing teeth this can show aggression. If a child draws a whole in a tree this could signifie abuse. Although you can tell a lot from drawings you have to try to get a stronger outlook with more drawings from the child. When telling a child something about their drawing you have to be careful on how you word it. If you word it in a somewhat hurtful way this could ruining the childs drawings for the rest of their life. If you word it in a nice way then this could make all the difference in their lives. I think that art therapy is very interesting and should be studied more in depth, because I believe that this is a great way to figure out what a child is thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Aubrey- I agree that when you are going through a hard time drawing can be very beneficial and sometimes help you through things you're going through better.

Kay-leigh- I would also like to learn more about art therapy, I think that it is a growing way to asses children.

  26. Art can be used as another type of therapy. Instead of talking you analyze the picture for feelings. They did say a picture is worth a thousand words. I believe that this is true. If a child draws a house with no windows you know that that child is closed off emotionally. I also believe that you should not judge the drawing of the picture because that could change a child's behavior.

I agree with Andee. The drawings are not a definite answer because they could mean different things and that a further study should happen.

Cierra- I think when we become a teenager we start to judge our self's more than we were little kids.

  27. In this article it discusses art which is often used as a successful diagnostic tool. The art is used to indicate children and/or families emotions. If a problem is detected by the art then further diagnosis can be done by a clinician. What the patients decide to draw can indicate their emotional feeling along with the utensil they use. A drawling that indicates aggression, may show a character with large hands. A child that is emotionally off my draw a drawling such as a house with no window. Scribbles and scratches can be a symbol of chaos in there life.

I agree with Kay-Leigh and disagree, I think that children should not be discouraged when then draw although, if a child is passionate about drawling and isn't good at it, at some point someone should tell him/her that they are not a good artist. If you never tell them they are not good at drawling they are going to grow up and become a artist that can't draw and I do not know about you but I do not think that would be a good occupation.

I agree with Kay-Leigh again, I would like to learn more about art therapy because it expresses a persons emotions and personality very well.

I agree with Grace, art therapy should only be used for those who are good at art but, for those who feel they can better express there feelings through it.

  28. In reading this article i have learned that kids do not have discuss their problems in speech, but can so on paper. Children these days like to invoke their emotions by drawing many different pictures. An example is "House/Tree/Person." The child draws a house first and if the house does not have windows or doors, then the child is closing himself off. If he/she draws a person with no hands or feet that usually means they feel powerless. As said i before children can draw many different pictures and show truly how they feel at that moment. To truly determine how that kid feels, you should have them draw a couple pictures, because one picture is not enough to prove the way they feel. If a kid draws scribbles or random marks, that usually means that their life is chaos or not stable. I believe this article is very accurate on what they say, except one part i believe is not true. Teenagers to these days still draw pictures to show their emotions. I sometimes "doodle" on occasion to show how i truly felt that day.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Paige- I agree with you that it is amazing how what these kids are drawing are really showing what they are feeling inside of their body.

Brittany - I agree that it can be difficult to say words instead of expressing them someother way. I sometimes tend to not express the way I feel by speech, but instead by drawing random pictures on scratch paper.

  30. This article is about art therapy and how its used as a diagnostic tool for people who dont express emotions well with others. Its mostly used for children but adults use it also. A drawling that indicates aggression, may show teeth or a large character. A child that has emotional issues may draw a something as simple as a house with no window or doors. Scribbles and scratches can be a symbol of chaos in there life and a sign of unstablness. I find this article very interesting and it makes me want to go get my drawings looked at just to see what they could possibly mean.

  31. Shyla: I also believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. You can tell a lot through a picture and this article proves it.

Kay-Leigh: I agree with you on never discourage a child on their artwork because thats how they express themselves and you could possibly make that child never want to draw again or reallllly hurt their feelings.

  32. Brianna Ries - PM

Art therepy can be used as a tool to see whats going on with a child. They are told to draw a house, preson, and a tree, depending on the way they draw it you find out different things about the child. If a child draws a house with no window or doors it could mean it will be had to get into the childs emotions. If the child's person does not have hands the child might feel powerless. They might start over alot and that might mean they feel they are inadequate or to hard on themselfs.

Andee - I also agree that there could be other reasons behind the hole in the tree because I've always draw holes in my trees. It was never because I had a problem or I wanted a bird to live in it just because I thought it made the picture look better.

    Erin -

My art is normally bright and coolful because I use it as a stress releaver. When I make my art work cheerfull it takes my mind off the things going wrong and makes me happy.

  33. Using art therapy can give you a lot of information on what someone is feeling inside, especially a child. They use different programs in art therapy. One of the programs is called "House/Tree/Person", this is when the child is given a piece of paper and just told to draw a house, tree, and a person. Depending on how they draw the house, the tree, and the person the therapist can figure out how they are feeling. During the time that the child is drawing the therapist asks the child questions, and studies the drawing. The child has to do multiple drawings not just one so the therapist can really figure out what is happening with that child. The drawings can show if a child is being abused, feels powerless, aggression, feels like their life is chaos, and if the child is not thriving. The therapist can also have an entire family do the drawings to see how that particular family functions.

@Erin: I have no artistic skills, but I do like to try to draw. When I draw it is very colorful and big. I think that my drawings would show that I am happy all the time, which is not always true.

@Kay-Leigh: I agree with you on what you said about not telling a child that they're drawings are not good. This can really hurt them and bring them down. You should always encourage that child to make sure they believe in themselves.
