This article first compares a Charismatic leader versus a Servant leader. First off a charismatic leader is one whose followers want to be interacting with this person and continue with those leaders’ ideas. A charismatic leader can also tell how their patients are feeling and what kind of mood that individual may be in. A servant leader is one who does the job to get it done. They are not typically interested in feeling any emotion back they just want to care for the patient. A servant leader will normally not take praise for good things that they have done but they are okay with being recognized for a mistake they may have made. Many servant leaders also feel like it is their responsibility, not something they love and do not mind doing. They also compare a manager and a leader in this article. A manager is one who makes sure the work is being done and is organized. Whereas a leader is one who takes it upon themself to make sure the work put in front of them is completed to the best of their ability. Many managers tend to just place the work in front of the workers without helping lead the group. I can relate this information in my own life with managers I have had.
In this article, Grace Hopper is was a former Naval Admiral said that there is a difference between a manager and a leader. She said you manage things and you lead people. There are two different types of leaders, charismatic and servant leaders. A charismatic leader is someone who is excited about their job. Charismatic leaders draw their followers in to believe in their ideas. A servant leader is the opposite of the charismatic leader. They seem to listen more, and are more concerned with what is best for the group rather than the individual person. They are usually first to admit to a mistake and will not easily accept praise. In general a leader must be able to accept change and learn to adapt to change and lead everyone on the right path. It is harder to lead people than it is to manage things. There may be two different types of leaders but they all have one common goal. They both want to experience growth and learning within their job.
Nicole: Yes I have noticed that in my previous job. Your manager gives you a task but you may not always know how to complete the task. It should be their job as a leader and a manager to help you with your tasks.
The article is about what makes a leader. There are two different types of leaders a charasmatic and a servant. The servant leader does the minimal amount of work to accomplish the task at hand and he only does so because it is expected of him. The charasmatic leader jumps in and puts just as much or more work into it as others. They go beyond the goal and do the best possible job that they can. The second comparison is a manager vs. a leader. A manager organizes and does the work but must also show the qualities of a leader to earn the respect of his employees.
Nicole-I work at the Turonis in Newburgh and i fell that my Boss shows the qualities of a leader. He isnt afraid to help us out when we need to and works just as hard as we do. I like my job because i know that i am necessary to get the job done. Being a leader he makes work much more enjoyable.
Hannah- I agree I think that they should be a leader as well as the manager. I also strongly agree with them having to support us and help finish the task.
Jack- I'm glad you were lucky and got a great manager. Now that I have moved to Menard's my managers are a lot better. They are also leaders as well and help us get through whatever we need to and it does make it a lot better!
This article explains how a manager and a leader are not the same thing. It is also stated that there are two different kinds of leaders, which are charismatic and servant. A charismatic will get people to follow through charm and excitement. Some politicians are charismatic leaders. A servant leader is one her focuses more on their followers than on themselves. They will take the blame for what was done wrong and do not easily take praise for what they have done right. A managers tasks can be done without leading, but a leader needs to be able to take on both roles.
Nicole: In my job I am lucky enough to have managers that are willing to help out whenever it is needed, and not just expect us to do everything.
Leadership and management in the nursing area are often times confused. A leader will coach, guide, and inspire others to do the same. A manager must focus on one task to become successful. The two types of leaders are a charismatic and servant leader. A charismatic leader has an inflated self image that draws people to follow them. THe charismatic leader will search for attention and believe that they are the most important person. A servant leader wants to serve their followers instead of being served themselves. A nurse can be seen as a servant leader because they are always serving and helping their patients. The ultimate goal as a nurse is to balance out these types of leaders to help your patients and to have others help you with tasks.
Jack- I agree with you Jack with my job. As a soccer referee I do not have a real manager, but I do have people in charge over me to decide if I get my referee licenses or not. They serve as managers to me but they also help me improve as a referee because they are always at my games supporting me and helping me develop as a better referee.
Kelsey- The referees that help me develop do not expect me to do everything either. They find every possible way to help me become better.
This article describes the major difference between what a leader and manager really are. It also describes two different types of leadership which are the servant style and the charismatic style. The charismatic leader tends to use charm and excitement to obtain followers. The servant leader tends to be the one who serves its followers and not to be served like the charismatic leader. This leader is usually what you call "soft", meaning that they listen and empathize with the followers.
A manager is one who is a task and work oriented individual who can manage without leading. A leader needs to lead others and qualify in both roles. A leader must be aware of the tasks needed to accomplish their goals.
Nicole: I've seen that with my baby brother having special needs, I have turned more into a leader. With a special needs child at hand, you have to know the tasks that need to be attended to in order to help the child (medicine, therapy, etc.).
This article is about Charismatic and Servant to Manager v.s Leadership. In this article. "The Charismatic leader is a pro at detecting the mood of an individual or audience and incorporating actions to suit those moods." Which to me means that they are a manipulative person to get the top. A Servant is more on the lines who serve their people instead of the people serving them. Helping out others instead of just trying to get a head. Manager to Leader, to me there is a big difference. For Ex. at my work we have managers, who manage and keep things in order, but when you lead you set the examples you teach your peers/followers.
Hannah-I agree as well that manager and leader should go together, although in many cases one overrides the other, which brings forth the Charismatic and Servant.
This article explains two types of leaderships. One type of leadership is charismatic leadership and the other is servant leadership. Charismatic leadership is when a person leads you into following them. They want you to follow their ideas and what they do to complete a task. Servant leadership motivates a person to help serve as leaders. They would listen to you and put everyone before themselves. The article also compares managers and leaders. A manager gives you a task and then you do it, like in a job. A leader helps usually shows you how to do what you are asked, through out the whole task. I never thought about the different types of leadership. All people are leaders but they do not always know it. What would the world be like if there was no leaders?
Nicole - I feel like almost all managers are leaders. At my job, my manager was the one who taught me how to do my job. So to me, that makes her a leader.
Andee - I know being with your baby brother has taught you a lot. What kind of tasks do you do that make you a leader to him?
This article talked about the different types of leaders and the differences between a leader and a manager. A leader would be someone who guides you and helps you with a task if you do not know how to do it. A manger, however is someone who plans, controls, and organizes. There are certain types of leaders, one being Charismatic. This person brings out the best in themselves by being exciting, and friendly and being kind to everyone. While a Servant serves others instead of themselves. Being a leader and a manager can get you through a lot in life. Sometimes you have to step up and be the leader because others won't. i think being one or both can get you far in life and make people think better of you!
Aubrey - As for your comment to Andee, i have a baby brother who is 6 now. When they are that young of age you try being a leader and a role model for young ones. it can be as simple as showing them that it's "cool" to eat vegetables, or its "cool" to go to school, things like that.
Jack - I'm glad your manager is helpful to you! Mine is as well, he is very friendly and is always there when i need something. He has taught me different things i need to know for the job and also as well as the real world!
In the nursing field, management and leadership are interchanged frequently. You can’t manage people, you lead them. To lead, you guide someone and try to help them reach their goals. You manage things by planning, organizing controlling, and coordinating. There are many types of leadership styles. The charismatic leader has good self-esteem and draws followers to their ideas. The servant leader focuses on listening and empathizing. I thought this article was interesting because I never really thought about management and leadership.
Nicole: I don’t have an actual job, but I help out with things where there are “managers”. It just so happens that they are great leaders as well. I think that is how it should be. I think being able to lead makes the manager a good one.
Kelsey: I agree. I think a manager should be able to take both roles. If a person is not able to lead and show others the way, I don’t think they could be a very good manager.
Aubrey: I do not portray myself as a leader to Gabriel but to the others around me. Yes I do help with his therapy and have to guide him in the right paths, but what I meant was leading and showing others how to handle the situation. All of my friends who know my brother know his information and what needs to be done in case of an emergency. This is what I meant, sorry about the confusion.
Paige: I totally agree with you. I have 3 younger ones and I just happen to be the oldest, so I feel it is my responsibility to be a healthy, good role model.
There are many differences between leaders and managers. Sometimes people think they are the same thing. According to this article, managing includes tasks like planning, organizing, controlling, and coordinating. But leading includes coaching, guiding, and inspiring. There are two styles of leadership discussed in this article although there are many different kinds. The two styles that are discussed are the Charismatic leader and the Servant leader. A servant leader serves their followers instead of being served themselves. A charismatic leader uses charm and excitement. Which leader do you think you're more like?
Nicole- I've never really had a job besides babysitting. But wouldn't you consider most managers leaders? Managers are responsible for a lot. They need to be leaders or things won't run efficiently.
Aubrey- I can't really image a world without leaders. I would imagine things would be very chaotic.
Many people think managing and leading are one in the same, but actually, they are different. Things are managed, and people are lead. Managing consists of planning and organizing, while leading consists of guiding and inspiring. A leader, though, has to be able to manage, as well; although a manager can accomplish work fine without leading. When it comes to being a leader, there are two different types of leadership styles: charismatic and servant. A charismatic leader is full of excitement and puts that excitement into their ideas. This makes a person want to follow this type of leader and serve them. They also are great at detecting moods of individuals/audiences, and build up the self-concept of the followers, so the followers think their group and ideas are better than others. On the other hand, a servant leader is more focused on what they can do for the group, rather than themselves. They also are very good listeners and know how to empathize. In addition, they take responsibility for mistakes, and rarely take credit for accomplishments. This article was very helpful to me in that I could distinguish the types of leaders, and also determine what type of leader I am. I think I am a servant leader because I always put others before myself. I also really liked the quote, “You cannot manage men in battle. You manage things, you lead people” (Hopper, 1986), because it's very true, and also helps distinguish the roles of a manager and a leader.
Nicole: At my job, I see my boss as both a manager and a leader because there are some things she will show us how to do, and then there are times when she gives us a task and lets us figure it out for ourselves. As a student, I think I take the role of a manager because I like things to be organized.
Aubrey: I think the world would be absolutely chaotic without leaders. Like the article stated, a manager plans and organizes, and a leader offers guidance. The world needs both: we need people to plan things, and also leaders because everyone needs guidance. To add to your initial question, how would the world be if we only had leaders or only managers?
In this weeks article they compare a charismatic leader and a servant leader, also the compare a manager and a leader. A charismatic leader who uses charm and excitement to get the attention of their followers. They also make their ideas and images fun and exciting to excite their followers. A charismatic leader is good at reading the moods of an induvidual or an audience. This helps them be a good leader and have many followers, because they can change things to suit their followers moods. The charismatic leader likes to be the most important person, and to also be served. Unlike the charismatic leader, the servent leader likes to serve their people instead of being served. The servent leader is seen as soft because their main focus is on listening and putting what is good for the "whole" rather that one individual. The servent leader will be the first to take responsibillity for errors and will be the last person to take credit for things done correctly. A manager is task or work oriented and can be a manager without leading people. A leader must be able to lead people and be a manager at the same time. I really liked the quote by Grace Hopper that said “You cannot manage men in battle. You manage things, you lead people.” This article made me realize that ther are very different types of leaders. It also made me see that I am more of a servent leader. I never realized the big difference between the two since I am not a charismatic leader. The article was very intersting and it helps with knowing how to react with certain leaders and their style of being a leader.
Nicole: I have never had an actual job, but I have been self imployed and I understand what your talking about when you say that managers just put the job in front of you and thats it. I was just told what to do, they didn't explain anything or do other leader like skills. They use their authority to be above you but don't do the same things as a leader.
Paige: I know what you mean about being a leader for your siblings. My younger brother is twelve and even though he is getting older he still looks up to me. Being a leader for them is not only good for yourself but it's also good for them too. Helping them realize it is a good thing to do their homework, or always being nice to others can make a big impact. Being a leader is very important.
In the nursing arena, leadership and management can be confused and are at times thought to be interchangeable. To lead effectively, one must also understand the role of a manager as well as being in touch with their leadership style. Often the terms manager and leader are used interchangeably but that is not the case. While a manager is task or work oriented and can effectively manage without leading, but a leader in essence leads people and must be able to function in both roles. The quote that Grace Hooper said...i really like. Also, by reading this i realized that I am a servant leader, I like to serve others than being served myself.
Nicole: When you said that some jobs, the managers just throw the job at your face is very much true. You just kinda have to figure things our for yourself. That could either be a good or a bad thing.
Brittney: The world would really be a chiotic place without leaders. Sometimes leaders can get out of hand and do some not so good things, but they are the people we mainly get our guidance from.
In the nursing area, most people don't know that there is a difference between being a manager and a leader. To be a manager is to manage accounts and numbers while being a leader is teaching, guiding, and helping other nurses. There are two types of nursing leadership, charismatic and servant. A charismatic leader will make all their ideas seem much better than all the rest. The service leader will put the team before themselves. Either way works to foster learning.
Vivian: No, not all managers are leaders. Some work behind the scenes while a leader will work along side their pupil.
Hannah: I agree that although there are different kinds of leaders they all work towards the same goal.
From reading this article, there are many differences between a manager and a leader. While reading you learn about two types of leaders. Charismatic and servant leaders. Charismatic leaders are the ones who love attention and use their image to get people to follow and serve him. Charismatic leaders are also experts at recognizing moods in individuals and groups, and usually include actions that go with the mood. For a servant leader, they are known as caring and friendly people. They will listen and empathize your problems. Servant leaders also serve his or her followers instead of serving themselves. For a manager, you are usually work oriented and can manage without a leader. For a leader, you like to lead people in positive ways and are able to do both tasks of a manager. Leaders also need to show proper behaviors, so that changes can be made, if necessary. Grace Hooper, a retired Naval Admiral, quoted that "You cannot manage men in battle. You manage things, you lead people." In my eyes, i feel like a leader at certain times. I also feel like i am more of a charismatic person, but also a servant at times.
After reading this article I have a much better understanding of what kind of job my manager has, and I understand as to why it is so frustrating at times. No one can make someone choose how to live their life, or simply intruct them how to do things. You can only help lead them into the right direction, and help manage things. "To lead, one will coach, guide, and inspire actions to fulfill a goal or complete a task." That alone was very helpful to me, because I get "leading" confused with forceful, hateful words. I come off a lot of times very harsh and blunt when trying to help teach a person something, and if their doing it wrong I get very impatient. But to be in this field of Health Care you have to have patience, and be able to work with every type of personality. If I had to choose to live by a Charasmatic Leadership or Servant Leadership, I would want to be a servant. Help others succeed, and when they do, give them the credit and applaud them for making it.
Nick: I can see you being more of the Charismatic Leader, you love to help people, you love looking sharp, and you just love getting credit in the things you do. I can see you helping a lot of people, just don't get to proud :)
Vivian: I can see myself being both in a sense, but I think i'd rather stay humble and be the Servant Leader, I feel it would be more rewarding.
This blog was about the different types of leaders charismatic vs Servant. Charismatic leaders tend to use their charm and excitement to draw in follower. By pumping up their beliefs and ideas they get their points across. however servant leaders use their listening skills and compassion to draw in follwers. Both of these are very important to running any successful team.
Vivian: I think I am a Charismatic Leader, I am very passionate about my opinions and beliefs and I use my love of theater to convey them as exciting and dramatically as possible. Also I feel like charismatic leaders kind of have a bad rep, they can sincerely care but they have a different way of showing their commitment to others.
Aubery: I don't think everyone is a leader. If everyone lead no one would follow which means everyone would be doing whatever they thought was right. The world would be chaotic so I feel that there are leaders and there are followers and everyone is one or the other.
This article starts out talking about a retired Naval Admiral named Grace Hopper who says there is a difference between a leader and a manager. To manage is to focus on tasks such as planning, organizing, contolling and cordintaing, while a leader will coach, guide, and inspire actions to fulfill a goal or complete a task. There are two different kinds of leadership styles, Charismatic Leadership style and Servant Leadership style. Charismatic leadership style is someone who uses charm and excitment to entice followers and a Servent leadership style is someone who will take responsability for errors and will be last to accept praise for things done right. The ultimate goal for a nursing leader is to foster growth and learning, to delegate and ensure task completion to move toward that growth, and to maintain an environment conducive to positive patient outcome and an overall healthy healing continuum.
Miya: I agree with you about how you understood what kind of job your manager has and how frustrated times can be for people. I can now understand why my boss always yells at her employees for not listening.
Paige: I agree with you when you talked about being a leader to your siblings. I have five sibliings who look up to me to be there romodel. Doing nice things to poeple and showing your siblings that they need to do things when they are told can greatly impact them for many years.
Grace Hopper was a retired Naval Admiral who explained how you cannot manage men who are in the battle field but rather, lead the men to do what is right to do in battle. There are two types of leadership styles that are known, Charismatic leadership and, Servant leadership. Charismatic leaders tend to charm and excite there followers and, they use that to command lead. Servant leaders tend to serve there followers and there followers respect them and that's how they lead. Servant leaders normally except fault when they are wrong very openly but, do not do well with admitting they are right. It is very hard to lead someone but it is a much better reward. On the other hand It is much easier to manage a group of people but, the reward if far less therefore, which is better?
I agree with Paige in a since, I have siblings that look up to me but, i can better relate to a leader by "Wrasslin". "Wrasslin" teaches leadership skills and me, being captain of the wrasslin team i feel like many people look at everything i do. It's easy to manage a situation but, It's a totally different situation when your and leader and your setting the tempo.
I believe i am a Servant leader, I normally own up to my faults and i don't like to boast about my victories or admitting i am right. I am not a push over though, i kinda got the drift from the article that servant leaders are push overs. I also enjoy serving others and putting them first, people may just think I'm a nice guy but, i do it because i enjoy it.
I understand my articles are late and i admit that i could and probably should have done them earlier but, my power has been out and it just come back on therefore i didn't have internet. I am sorry for the inconvenience.
Leadership and management are two very different actions. In fact, there are two styles of leaders, those that are charismatic and those that are servant leaders. Charismatic leaders detect the mood of a group of individuals and use charming methods in order to exhibit their influence. Servant leaders, on the other hand, are motivated by serving others instead of having others serve them. Leaders are well-rounded individuals that will act prudently in various situations. I belive that managers are important, but i would rather have a leader type figure in a work enviornment.
Nick: I too agree that most managers are not necessarily leaders, for I had a manager at work that definately did not posess the qualities of a leader.
Brittany: The world definately would be a chaotic place without leaders because the military that defends us runs on good quality leaders.
There are two different types of leadership. One is a charismatic leader. This leader will be very enthusiastic and is very good at persuading people to be on their side. They also have a good reputation. The servant leader is the second type. The servant leader is the type to in consideration of their followers. They listen to their people and take the blame if there is a mishap. I think i am more of a servant leader than a charismatic leader.
I agree with Alex I would want to work under a leader because a manager does not necessarily have leadership qualities.
I agree with Brandon. The article made it seem like the servant leader was a push over.

ReplyDeleteNicole - I feel like almost all managers are leaders.
ReplyDeleteAubrey - As for your comment to Andee, i have a baby brother who is 6 now.
ReplyDeleteNicole: I don’t have an actual job, but I help out with things where there are “managers”.
ReplyDeletePaige: I totally agree with you. I have 3 younger ones and I just happen to be the oldest, so I feel it is my responsibility to be a healthy, good role model.
ReplyDeleteThere are many differences between leaders and managers.
ReplyDeleteNicole- I've never really had a job besides babysitting.
ReplyDeleteNicole: At my job, I see my boss as both a manager and a leader because there are some things she will show us how to do, and then there are times when she gives us a task and lets us figure it out for ourselves.
ReplyDeleteUnlike the charismatic leader, the servent leader likes to serve their people instead of being served.
ReplyDeleteNicole: When you said that some jobs, the managers just throw the job at your face is very much true.
ReplyDeleteVivian: No, not all managers are leaders.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article I have a much better understanding of what kind of job my manager has, and I understand as to why it is so frustrating at times.
ReplyDeleteCordell: i have to agree with you on Vivian's comment. Most managers are not really leaders. One of my managers works primarily in the back.
ReplyDeleteKelsey K: i agree with you on the Grace Hooper's quote. It was a very good and it helps differentiate between a manager and a leader very well.
Nick: I can see you being more of the Charismatic Leader, you love to help people, you love looking sharp, and you just love getting credit in the things you do. I can see you helping a lot of people, just don't get to proud :)
ReplyDeleteVivian: I can see myself being both in a sense, but I think i'd rather stay humble and be the Servant Leader, I feel it would be more rewarding.
ReplyDeleteVivian: I think I am a Charismatic Leader, I am very passionate about my opinions and beliefs and I use my love of theater to convey them as exciting and dramatically as possible.
ReplyDeleteMiya: I agree with you about how you understood what kind of job your manager has and how frustrated times can be for people. I can now understand why my boss always yells at her employees for not listening.
ReplyDeletePaige: I agree with you when you talked about being a leader to your siblings.
ReplyDeleteThere are two types of leadership styles that are known, Charismatic leadership and, Servant leadership.
ReplyDeleteI believe i am a Servant leader, I normally own up to my faults and i don't like to boast about my victories or admitting i am right. I am not a push over though, i kinda got the drift from the article that servant leaders are push overs. I also enjoy serving others and putting them first, people may just think I'm a nice guy but, i do it because i enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI understand my articles are late and i admit that i could and probably should have done them earlier but, my power has been out and it just come back on therefore i didn't have internet. I am sorry for the inconvenience.
ReplyDeleteLeadership and management are two very different actions.
ReplyDeleteNick: I too agree that most managers are not necessarily leaders, for I had a manager at work that definately did not posess the qualities of a leader.
ReplyDeleteThe servant leader is the type to in consideration of their followers.
